Invest time in what you really need

A while back I spent some time learning a javascript library called D3. This is a really powerful library for creating chart graphics and more. Even though I learned some about this library it – as I see it now – was a complete waist of time.
There are so many chart libraries for javascript – that even use the D3 library – I could have used.
So my advise to any of you reading this post:
Ask your self these questions:
How often am I going to use the knowledge I am about to acquire?
If the answer is not often, try and see if there are alternatives out there.
Will this new knowledge give me any benefits (like I need this to get a new job)? If the answer to this question is no – again – see if there are other alternatives out there.
